Herbert Simmons is the only Altadena Town Council member who has ever attempted to reach out to constituents in our council district/census tract (whatever it’s called) in the 17 plus years that I’ve lived here. I don’t understand why the Town Council wants to remove an elected official who has made harmless mistakes, apologized for them, and has refrained from repeating them. Back in 1973, Kissinger and Nixon removed Salvador Allende who had been overwhelmingly elected by the people of Chile. His crime: wanting to do something meaningful for those who elected him. Is the Altadena Town Council a Pinochet dictatorship in miniature? Why the secrecy? Will people begin “disappearing” from Altadena next?

Herbert Simmons is a positive role model in the Altadena community, I don’t understand why the Town Council want to remove him from office. It is people like Mr. Simmons that gives our children hope for the future. The student/teacher of the month program is a magnificant program that provides incentives for both students and teachers to be shining lights unto the rest of the world. REMOVING MR. SIMMONS FROM OFFICE WILL BE A GREAT MISFORTUNE FOR THE TOWN COUNCIL….THEY ARE MAKING A BIG MISTAKE… HERBERT SIMMONS IS A BRILLANT MAN…

The Altadena Town Council is controlled by a few members and their business buddies whose goal is to enrich themselves and their egos. The rest of of the council members are a bunch of “yes” men and women with no backbone. Mr. Simmons is rocking the boat by refusing to submit to this “leadership.” This is a threat to the “old guard” of the council and explains their efforts to remove Mr. Simmons.

The Altadena Town Council clearly has misunderstood the spirit of Mr. Simmons’ actions and are, in my opinion, acting a bit heavy handed by passing a summary judgment to remove him from office .
Mr. Simmons did what many inexperienced politicians do. He made mistakes. He assumed that a great idea, if executed autonomously and with minimal impact on council resources, would be accepted on its own merits. I can’t imagine how many blockbuster ideas die on the house floor in Congress or how many industry killer patents some scientist came up with that simply cannot be acted upon for the greater good. This is politics. Perhaps Mr. Simmons assumed his resourcefulness, creativity and high energy would be accepted by the council and that it (The Council) would weigh in on and offer unbiased commentary and discussion on programs he presented and after debate, decided on.
If Mr. Simmons had had a friend on the council, he might have had a mentor giving guidance and council on how to properly proceed with presenting a program the acceptable way. As it seems, instead of having co-council members to work with, Mr. Simmons in stead had a review committee who simply sat back, watched him make mistakes, evaluated performance, made judgments, declared themselves right and him wrong and eventually cut Mr. Simmons off at the knees simply because they could.
I know Herb Simmons to be a reasonable man. It seems to me that if the council wanted to work with Mr. Simmons at all, they would not have made this kind of decision so quickly. I would strongly urge the council and Mr. Simmons to drop your guards, stop the accusations, be fearless, engage in candor and achieve real communications. This does not have to happen.

What I don’t understand is how the Altadena Town Council has the authority (if it exists) to eject from the council a member elected by his constituents in a legal election. This is an unheard of matter in all the almost 50 yrs. of my living here. I say SHAME on the Town Council for its actions in this matter.

Herbert Simmons is a positive, recognizable presence in Altadena. He is a man who cares deeply about this community. He has made it his priority to raise awareness and bring deserved recognition to the formerly unsung educators in our community. He has worked tirelessly to bring long-needed adequate cell phone reception to our area. His efforts to unify and inform the community during the Station Fire are testament alone to this man’s dedication to Altadena.
I lived in this community for 5 yrs before I even knew the ATC existed! I still wouldn’t had Herbert Simmons not knocked on my door one day and introduced himself. I never could have imagined that such an ineffably, inexhaustibly, civic-minded individual resided here. Herbert Simmons makes me proud to live Altadena!

So do we want Politicians and Councilmen who cover up the truth, or ones who exposes the truth? I for one would want to have someone like Councilman Herbert Simmons who stands for the truth and exposes what is wrong and instead of covering up what is wrong.

It’s obvious that Mr. Simmons started a money collecting fund without first reaching out to the council. Do any of the residents and business know how much money was sent to Mr. Simmons? No because there’s no balance or check. That was what I felt was not a good look. There has to be some type of structure before I start contributing money to such a worthy cause. I have pointed this out to Mr. Simmons several times, when he firsrt emailed me his idea.

I do not understand your comment. You have to collect money in order to start a money collecting fund. Every penny I received was returned back to the supporters. All donations from businesses were in the form of coupons and certificates, in an effort to promote their businesses. It has also been stated several times that the student and teacher of the month programs, this website, the informal town hall dinner (catering and room rental) , the Altadena community newsletter and over 300 T-shirts given to the community, students and teachers have all been funded by myself only. I do not charge local businesses fees to advertise on this site. I have set this site up as a service to communicate with the community. I have not accepted money from anyone. Even the Altadena Town Council knows that I did not accept any money, or else they would have certainly listed it under their allegations against me. Thank you for your comment.

Mr Simmons is the only representative that goes out to the community. He knows who he represents because he knocked on our doors. He goes to the schools and shows achievement. He informs us. I’ve lived in Altadena for 12 years and have felt no representation until Mr. Simmons arrived. We don’t live in a secret society. I vote everyone who attends a secret meeting be terminated. What was said? Where is the defense. This is not how it should be. Mr Simmons apologized and made corrections. Can the council secret members do the same?

What is going on? You have a new member in Herbie Simmons and he is trying his best to do what is best for Altadena. He started the Teacher and Student of the Month program and he is visible in the community. If a few minor infractions have occurred, he is still learning. Have any of the ATC members ever made minor mistakes? Does absolute power by some corrupt absolutely? If they all worked together and shared their ideas, they would all be successful and have power? It takes a team to win a championship and they do this while working together. What is happening to team unity? Consider seriously about what you might decide on Nov. 17!!

TO Altadena Town Council
RE: OBJECTION TO REMOVAL OF HERBERT SIMMONS AT ATC COUNCILMAN
I am a former ATC Councilman for 4603 (~1980-1985), current Block Captain for the Chaney Trail Area, and serve on the Sheriff’s Community Advisory Council. I am speaking as an individual and my views do not represent those of organizations I belong to. I list my activity to say that I have been actively involved and concerned with the welfare of Altadena and I think Councilman Herbert Simmons has shown similar concern.
It has come to my attention that a committee has convened and voted in majority to remove Herbert Simmons as Councilman. I strongly object to such a move. I have followed his activities since he was elected and he has shown enthusiasm and concern for the betterment of Altadena. Some actions may appear to be very assertive but fall within good intentions. I have personally criticized him for some of his assertive actions and he has considered my concerns.
I have served as an officer on the ATC, Altadena Recreation Council, and Westside Residents Association, and have been actively involved in lots of community issues. I know how important it is to get people involved to help share the workload, even if you do not agree with them. Altadena has lots of active citizens and it is good to have channeled energy. Your actions discourage and even punish such activity and this does not help establish the credibility of the Altadena Town Council. I find it unusual that Council members can remove an elected representative. I’ve heard of censorship and reprimands by fellow representatives in such places as Congress, the Senate, and in local elected bodies but I am not aware of elected officials removing fellow elected officials. That should be limited to constituents of the electing body or by statute in case of felony convictions.
Please reconsider your recommendation to remove Herbert Simmons. Any actions to address removal at a minimum should be in open session where Altadena citizens can witness an open and fair process with community input.

Name: Rayne Stewart I am a Retired Teacher for the Pasadena Unified School District. I have just received an Altadena Community Alert flyer. To my dismay, I find that the Council has decided to remove Herbert Simmons. He has done an excellent job in providing recognition for the teachers of our Community who need the extra boost and support from the community. What investigation? Why can’t you as a council come to some sort of aggreement and meet together to reconcile your differences. I think this is slanderous that the community has to hear about this. Can’t you meet to agree to disagree before something like this reaches our community. Note: I don’t appreciate receiving flyers at my doorstep from a council who is suppose to represent all of us without a united front.

I echo the comments and concerns above. I may not agree with all of Mr. Simmons politics, policies, or views. However, if I don’t like them I can vote someone else in next time. At least he is engaged and doing something productive. This removal effort seems to be the equivalent of a lynching or witch hunt. It’s embarrassing for Altadena.

It is unfortunate that the non participators want to rid the participators to validate their own stagnation. This young man is making a difference and engaging the community in a positive way. And instead of embracing his action and mentoring his path, you choose to attempt to remove him from the Council. (And In closed session) You are aware that, that is done in the dark will come to the Light. You should be ashamed to let your community know your best intensions are not for Altadena but for yourselves.

Well, here it is December, and the council member who really is bringing “joy to the World” through his work for students and teachers of Altadena, is Herbert Simmons! The citizens of 4602 are singing out in appreciation of work needed and work done! Are the other council members tone deaf?

You need to go over to altadenablog, he just put up a post that is very negative towards Herbert Simmons. What can those of us in 4602 do about this whole controversy? I do not understand why this misunderstanding cannot be resolved, and I also do not understand people’s opposition to the concept of Simmons’ program (see comment on altadenablog.) I understand opposition to the initial misrepresentation of the program, but now it seems that some people are attacking Simmons for the actual program itself.

Thank you for your comments and concern. Please join the write-in campaign and share this information with each of your neighbors. Encourage them to join the write-in campaign as well, and address your letters to Chairman Sund, and most importantly, cc: the Pasadena Weekly and Star-News. We must inform as many in the community as possible to give them a choice. (See “Write-In Campaign” under the Current Issues tab) Next, and most importantly, please attend the next Altadena Town Council Meeting on December 15th and demand a positive end to this unnecessary controversy.

The ATC has always had an inflated sense of self-importance. Through its quasi-legislative actions and the manner in which its members are elected — even the nomenclature of its bylaws — it holds itself out to be a “representative body” for Altadena, with the supervisor being Altadena’s “executive.” But when matters are tough, its members will conveniently cloak themselves under the thin shield of being merely an advisory board, to which rules of open government and transparency do not apply.
In 2001, census tract 4610 residents had to get then- council member C. R. Tillman removed through the recall process because the council wouldn’t oust him, despite his obvious, well-documented misconduct. ATC members position then was that it would be up to residents of his tract to remove him. So they drafted the petition, got the required signatures, and got over 600% of the required voters to remove him. It would have been more appropriate for the ATC to remove him than have residents recall him. But that is now the precedence.
So my position is the ATC has no foundation for removing Mr. Simmons. His misconduct comes no where near that of Tillman’s. And Mr. Simmons has taken steps to ensure that his programs represent those in his capacity as a member of the ATC from his tract, and not the ATC itself. Thus, under existing precedence, only his tract residents can remove him if, in their judgment, he has acted improperly.
In my humble opinion.

Let me get this straight…..he’s being accused of embezzlement or misappropriation of funds or overstepping the council’s bounds? What is it, if it’s a matter of protocol then removal is overkill. Give the young man an opportunity to learn and help the community he’s grown up in develop a rising star. He was voted in by the community and he is to be removed then let the community vote on his removal.

What a shame! And we thought it only happened in Washington. Ha Ha Ha right here in our own backyard!
Isn’t time that we become the change that we demand of one another so very often. It’s time for the old guard to share some of the space with the future,
While it’s true, Mr. Simmons might be a bit different-or awkward -a few shortcomings, his desire to support the community is undeniable. His heart us truly suncered One needs only to look at the letters from the students and teachers to realize the positive impact his so called negative work as done for them,
I think, that if he can inspire our children and acknowledge teachers by designing and paying for a simple t-shirt we ought to be proud. Besides, it’s a small price to pay to encourage a child to stay in school.
It’ definitely better than any rap record, movie or poster I’ve seen or heard lately. And, doggone better than the sounds of gunshots going off in the air or murdering our children!
A dear friend once told me “When you point a finger at someone, remember there are 4 more pointing back at you!” I think all 10 need to be focused on nurturing and
protecting our future and anyine that stands up to do so.
Herbie he needs to be groomed and nurtured as well.

Dear Herbert,
THANK YOU for stepping up and helping. It is very admirable. Sorry you are dealing with a group that has their own agenda.
Apparently the town council hasn’t noticed the shape the school’s are in around here. Shame on them for not following your footsteps by rolling up their sleeves and doing something to fix it.
I think your ideas to reward those doing well are correct, and puts emphasis on the good instead of the bad.
Thank you again for setting a good example by being willing to get involved.

Mr. Simmons,
What are the Town Council allegations against you? And why should the Town Council be under the Brown Act, if the Council is not a government body?
Is there a criminal check on Altadena Town Council members? Do you think there should be?
You were a very active Council member, good luck in your future endeavors.

Hi Ms. Hill. The allegations are listed under the “Current Issues” tab. To answer your questions, the Town Council should follow the Brown Act if it wishes to legitimize itself as a group that represents itself as the governing body of Altadena. In a similar case in Agua Dulce, another unincorporated area of Los Angeles, a court ruling determined that the Agua Dulce Town Council was subject to the Brown Act despite its lack of legislative authority.
To my knowledge, criminal background checks on ATC Members are not conducted, though the bylaws state that a felony conviction is grounds for removal.
I believe many things need to be revamped with the Altadena Town Council, the first being legitimizing itself and respecting the vote of the people, or you might as well not have elections.
